According to the British Skin Foundation, 60% of the population in the UK currently suffers, or has previously suffered, from one form of skin disease or another. This includes an estimated 15 million people living with eczema (Allergy UK) and 1.8 million with psoriasis (Psoriasis Association).
Eczema and atopic dermatitis
Eczema and atopic dermatitis are broadly interchangeable terms that are used in reference to a generalised skin irritation that involves an itchy, dry rash and the reddening of an area of skin. This condition can occur year-round or continuously – though many people find that their eczema flares up seasonally, usually in the colder months.
The other ‘dermatitis's’ – contact, seborrheic, and follicular
In addition to atopic, there are a number of other types of dermatitis that, while still common, are less widespread. Sometimes environmental factors will trigger these, such as in the case of contact dermatitis. In other cases, like follicular dermatitis, the symptoms will be naturally occurring.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an immune condition that occurs due to the speeding up of the skin replacement process. This leads to the formation of raised ‘plaques’ on the skin’s surface. Like eczema, psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, though it is most commonly found on a person’s elbows, knees, lower back or scalp. What makes psoriasis distinct to cases of dermatitis is that it typically develops in adults under the age of 35, and not often in children.
Self-care
People have found that, in addition to following the recommended advice of taking medicated treatments and avoiding harsh soaps, known irritants and allergens, consistent self-care has been known to alleviate discomfort.
Typically, this involves the regular use of ointments and moisturising creams – some of which can prove more effective than others.
This can mean that the process of finding one that works for you can become a daunting prospect.
